Kat and Frank’s North London wedding at Lauderdale House and The Star

I’d been eagerly looking forward to Kat and Frank’s wedding. It’s always a bit of a treat to work close to home and Kat and Frank picked two venues that are right on my doorstep, the wonderful Lauderdale House on the edge of Waterlow Park and The Star pub in Highgate.

I also love a pub wedding and Kat and Frank are easily one of the most chilled out couples I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. Their day was laid back, relaxed and it just flowed. It really did feel just like a big party and they made me feel very welcome.

And yes, it rained (my third wedding in a row! I’ve had a sunny one now though so I know I’m not jinxed!) and it was a bit chilly but the steamed up windows in the pub and the roaring log fire made it feel cozy, warm and inviting.

Thanks, Kat and Frank for giving me the pleasure of being involved in your day. Huge, massive congratulations to you both.

Beccy and Danny’s Stroud Park Engagement (with a wand and a light saber!)

I ran a little competition on my Facebook page back in February, offering a free engagement photoshoot to the first couple who replied to tell me they got engaged on Valentines Day. I’m a romantic at heart (good job given that I’m a wedding photographer, hey?) and the thought of a valentine’s day proposal warmed my heart a bit.

Beccy and Danny were the winners and when Beccy told me that they’re planning a wedding on 04th of May because Danny is a massive Star Wars geek (May The Fourth Be With You….) and then asked whether Danny could bring his Light Saber and she could bring her Harry Potter wand I was more than a little bit excited.

We met up in Stroud for some geeky fun and some pretty portraits. Congratulations Danny and Beccy. Your wedding sounds like it’ll be a blast!

St Pauls Cathedral Wedding Excitement

Well I don’t even have anything to blog about yet, as the thing that I’m blogging about hasn’t even happened but as you read this I’ll be on my way to London Bridge to photograph the lovely Juliet getting ready for her St Pauls Cathedral Wedding. Oh my!

I hoped I’d have a nice picture to illustrate this post with and I do have a nice picture to illustrate this post but it’s buried on an archive hard drive somewhere. It’s also on Flickr but I haven’t logged into Flickr for so long that I can remember neither my log in nor my password. I should probably do something about that.

Anyway, I wouldn’t usually blog about the wedding before I’ve photographed it but, you know, it’s St Paul’s Cathedral. I’m really excited even if I am only allowed to photograph the first five minutes. I’m only allowed to stay if I promise to be good and I’m only allowed to photograph up to the first hymn and then only from the back!

Anyway my excitement is making me ramble. If you’d like to see the picture I was referring to, it’s here.

Tell me about your weekend plans and have a sneak peek of another lovely London wedding that I’ll be blogging next week.

Featured! Wedding Ideas Magazine

I’m thrilled to have Sarah and Chris’ lovely Autumnal Hatfield House wedding featured in this month’s Wedding Ideas Magazine.

There was something else in there too…check it out….

Yup, that’s me in the middle! As well as photographing weddings, I’m writing about my own wedding planning over on the georgous Whimsical Wonderland Weddings and the lovely Lou arranged a photoshoot for me and the other Real Brides at the beautiful South Farm.

It was photographed by the very talented Anna Clarke and a whole host of brilliant suppliers were involved. It was good fun to be on the other side of the camera for a change.

Louise and Tony’s Pretty Lillebrook Manor Wedding

Louise and Tony were married at the beautiful All Saints Church in Bisson. I was asked to remain at the back of the church for the main part of the ceremony, which suited me fine as they had Jerusalem as one of their hymns and I got to have a sing along. I’m not religious myself but I do like a good hymn.

I adored Louise’s simple and elegant Stephanie Allin dress and the pretty bunting and jars of flowers set off their reception venue, Lillebrook Manor, perfectly.

I also especially enjoyed the speeches at Tony and Louise’s wedding. They were hilarious. And, yes, someone squeezed in *that* joke about going to Wales on their honeymoon…

Congratulations, Tony and Louise. It was wonderful to be involved in your wedding.
If you’d like to see more pictures from the day, head over to my Facebook Page later this week.

You’re waiting for a train… {Personal}

I’m all about the personal posts over the last few days it seems.

I watched Inception recently.

You’re waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away.
You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don’t know for sure.
But it doesn’t matter.

Why doesn’t it matter? It doesn’t matter because it’s better to be on the train speeding towards the unknown, with all of the excitement that it involves, than to be stuck looking at the same station day-in-day-out for the rest of your life.

Today is the day that I resign from my day-job.

I can’t really afford to do it. I have a wedding to pay for. Living in zone two of London costs a fortune. My wedding photography business doesn’t bring in the same level of income as my fairly well paid day job.

There are a million and one reasons that this is a bad decision. Frankly, making the move from the stability of a permanent job to the life of a self-employed creative is terrifying but I can’t carry on working 60+ hour weeks and I can’t carry on doing a day job that doesn’t fulfil me in the same way as my photography.

I have choices. Everyone does. I can keep feeling miserable because my day job isn’t what I really want to be doing. I could lament the fact that while I’m working full time I don’t have the time to really push my business forward. Or I could take a chance. A leap of faith.

You’re waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away.
You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don’t know for sure.
But it doesn’t matter.

Memories of The Sea {Personal}

What’s your earliest memory?

Those who know me well will tell you that my memory is terrible. People ask me if I remember when we… or do you remember that time when…. or wasn’t it funny when… I often look on blankly. The genuine answer is no, I don’t remember.

I don’t remember the minutiae of my life. Maybe that’s what compelled me to buy my first SLR a few years ago; a desire to keep a constant record of those things around me, so that I don’t forget them.

I have a list of little personal projects that I’d like to undertake to preserve my memories. I’d like to photograph the flat that I live in, as it’s been mine and Pete’s first proper home together and I know we won’t live here for ever.

I’d like to photograph every step of my walk to work one day.

I’d like to record more of my day to day life.

I’d like to explore bit of my own past, through photography to better understand where I came from.

My granddad has dementia and his memory isn’t what it used to be. He lives in Suffolk but he grew up in Brixham, Devon, so when I was down there recently visiting Pete’s parents I went to Brixham harbour to take some pictures to send to him.

I expect Brixham has changed significantly since my Granddad lived there but memories can be sparked by the smallest glimmer of recognition.

In fact I felt as though I knew Brixham even though I’ve never been. I have always been drawn to the sea and uninterrupted horizens. I hope to convince Pete that we should move to the coast one day…

Trevor and Diana – West London Walpole Park pre wedding photoshoot

We were worried that the heavens would open and throw out our plans to head to Walpole Park for Trevor and Diana’s pre wedding photoshoot, as it had been raining solidly for the preceeding few days. Luckily the sun came out and we spent a really nice few hours wondering around Walpole Park in West London, while they filled me in about their wedding plans.

They’re getting married next month and they’re planning a church ceremony and a reception at the Runnymede Hotel . The Runnymede has some brilliantly quirky features, including a wall of rubber ducks! The hotel is also in a beautiful location next to the Thames so fingers crossed that the sun is shining.

100 Strangers Project 2/100

I was so happy to have finally photographed my first stranger as part of my 100 Strangers that I decided to strike while the iron was hot and find stranger number 2 pretty quickly.

It was never going to be very hard to find visually interesting people in Glastonbury and I spotted Sher while browsing in a book shop. Three guesses as to what drew me to her.

Name: Sher
Where I saw them: A book shop in Glastonbury
What made me want to take their portrait: Mustache envy. You don’t see many ladies rocking such fine facial hair. Sher told me that she’d had some interesting reactions to her ‘tache but I was the only person to ask if they could take her picture.

If this picture is of you, please tag yourself on Facebook.
